How Poplin Decides Which Laundry Pros Get Orders: Points, Rank, Tips and Retention Explained
Poplin says higher-ranked Laundry Pros get access to orders first. Here’s how points, ratings, tips, retention and badges determine which Pros see available work.
Short answer: Poplin uses an automated points-and-ranking system to determine which Laundry Pros get access to available orders first. Laundry Pros can choose whether to accept an available order, but Poplin says higher-ranked Pros see orders before lower-ranked Pros, while new and lower-ranked Pros get access to fewer orders.
A Laundry Pro's standing can be influenced by customer ratings, tips, pickup and delivery speed, messaging, customer feedback and customer retention. Points also unlock badge levels that can affect how many orders a Laundry Pro is allowed to work at one time.
So while Poplin Laundry Pros have meaningful flexibility over when and where they work, they do not all get access to the same available work at the same time.
How does Poplin decide which Laundry Pros get orders?
Poplin ranks Laundry Pros, and that rank affects who gets access to available orders first.
According to Poplin's Introduction to Points:
"Jobs are offered to Laundry Pros in order of Laundry Pro rank."
Poplin says the highest-ranking Laundry Pros get access to orders first. New and lower-ranked Laundry Pros get access to fewer orders, while Pros gain access to more as their rank improves.
The company describes that outcome as intentional. Poplin says its system is designed to favor and reward the Laundry Pros it considers its strongest performers and advises highly ranked Pros to remain consistent so they maintain their advantage.
Its separate guide on How to Get Offered More Orders describes the marketplace this way:
"Being a Laundry Pro is very competitive."
For lower-ranked Pros trying to get more work, Poplin recommends temporarily widening their work radius. Then, the company says:
"As your Laundry Pro rank improves and you get access to more orders, you can become more selective about which orders you accept."
That creates an important distinction: a Laundry Pro can be free to decline work while still having limited control over how much work reaches them in the first place.
Can Poplin Laundry Pros choose which orders they accept?
Yes.
On its current Laundry Pro recruitment page, Poplin tells prospective Laundry Pros to "Accept the gigs you want" and says it is up to them when they work. The company describes Laundry Pros as independent contractors who can choose whether to accept available orders and set their work radius.
Poplin's account tools also give Pros control over their availability, and its Order Support documentation includes a process for declining requested orders.
So the flexibility Poplin advertises is real.
But the ability to choose whether to accept an order is different from deciding which Pros get access to that order first.
Poplin controls the latter through its ranking and order-distribution system.
How does the Poplin Laundry Pro points system work?
Poplin says points determine a Laundry Pro's rank.
Its current Introduction to Points says Laundry Pros gain or lose points based on seven factors, although the written page currently lists only six:
- Customer ratings
- Customer tips
- Pickup speed
- Delivery speed
- Messaging
- Customer compliments and complaints
A Poplin training video embedded on the same page also identifies customer retention, which it defines as the percentage of customers a Laundry Pro serves who continue using Poplin.
The video and current written article aren't perfectly aligned.
The video says Pros gain or lose points based on "dozens of factors" before discussing some of the more important ones. It also describes points as "not the only, but ... one of the most important factors" determining rank.
The current written Help Center says there are seven point factors and states more directly:
"Your points determine your Laundry Pro rank."
It is unclear from Poplin's public documentation whether the underlying ranking system changed over time or whether the company is describing the same system differently.
One thing is explicit: Poplin says its point system is automated and based on an algorithm.
How do customer ratings affect Poplin points?
Customer ratings carry specific point values under Poplin's current system.
According to Poplin's points documentation:
| Customer rating | Points |
|---|---|
| 5 stars | +10 |
| 4 stars | 0 |
| 3 stars | -50 |
| 2 stars | -75 |
| 1 star | -100 |
Measured purely by point value, a one-star rating carries the same magnitude as ten five-star ratings.
That does not mean one bad review automatically determines a Laundry Pro's overall rank. Poplin describes rank as reflecting a broader performance history.
But its published point values make negative ratings substantially more consequential in points than positive ones.
Do customer tips affect Poplin points and rank?
Yes. Customer tips affect Poplin points.
Poplin states:
"The more your customers tip you, the more points you get."
That means a customer's tip can affect both a Laundry Pro's immediate earnings and their points within Poplin's ranking system.
There is an important caveat: Poplin's current documentation does not say that receiving no tip automatically causes a Laundry Pro to lose points.
Poplin says ratings, tips and customer compliments or complaints remain marked "Pending" until a customer submits them. If a customer never rates or tips, those categories can remain pending.
So the supported conclusion is that larger tips can generate more points, not that every customer who fails to tip penalizes the Laundry Pro.
How do pickup and delivery times affect Poplin points?
Poplin assigns points based on how quickly Laundry Pros pick up and return orders.
Its Pickup and Delivery Points documentation publishes specific point gains and losses.
For Standard orders, a pickup or delivery after the applicable deadline generally costs 10 points.
For Express orders, a late pickup costs 10 points and a late delivery costs 20 points. Depending on when an order is placed, some early pickups can earn as many as 20 points.
Poplin says the larger Express delivery penalty exists because customers pay for speed and describes lateness on those orders as a major break in customer trust.
Because points contribute to a Laundry Pro's standing and rank affects access to orders, pickup and delivery performance can ultimately contribute to a Pro's position in the queue for future work.
Does messaging affect Poplin points?
Yes.
Poplin says the speed, professionalism and friendliness of a Laundry Pro's messages can generate points.
The company does provide an overnight exception. Its current points documentation says there is no expectation that Laundry Pros respond quickly to messages sent between 8 p.m. and 8 a.m.
How important is customer retention on Poplin?
Poplin describes customer retention as one of the most important parts of getting future orders.
Its How to Get Offered More Orders guide states:
"Customer retention is key."
Poplin says that when a customer previously served by a Laundry Pro has another order delivered, the Pro's standing improves.
More importantly, the company calls retention:
"the most important factor in new order availability — for new and veteran Laundry Pros alike."
Poplin then tells Laundry Pros:
"Everything you do should be with the mindset of getting the customer you're serving to place another Poplin order."
That means a customer's behavior after an order is completed can matter to a Laundry Pro's future access to work.
How does Poplin calculate the customer retention score?
This is less clear.
Poplin's training video defines customer retention as the percentage of customers a Laundry Pro serves who continue using Poplin.
But Poplin's public documentation does not appear to provide a complete formula for the retention score Laundry Pros see inside the app.
Recent public discussions among Laundry Pros show confusion about the metric.
In one 2026 Reddit discussion about Poplin retention scores, a Laundry Pro said their retention score was falling despite completing many orders, serving mostly regular customers and receiving good ratings.
Other workers offered conflicting explanations for how the displayed score worked and disagreed about whether changes in the score itself affected incoming orders.
Those Reddit comments do not establish how Poplin's algorithm actually works.
Instead, they illustrate a separate issue: workers appear to be trying to understand a performance metric that Poplin itself describes as highly important to new-order availability.
Why does Poplin encourage Laundry Pros to find customers?
Poplin doesn't rely exclusively on customers already using its marketplace.
Its Marketing Playbook encourages Laundry Pros to build a customer base through:
- Facebook groups
- Social media
- Hotels
- Community marketing
- Google Business Profiles
- Physical marketing materials
Poplin's separate Laundry Pro referral program gives Pros additional incentives to recruit customers.
A newly referred customer can be offered to the referring Pro exclusively for a limited period if the customer is within that Pro's service area.
Poplin also awards referral points. The company explicitly says the points boost can help a Laundry Pro level up faster, get offered more orders and take more orders at one time.
Existing customers can also designate Laundry Pros as preferred Pros.
This adds another dimension to the order-access system: Laundry Pros can improve their position not only through completing orders, but also by helping bring customers onto the Poplin platform.
Why does Poplin encourage presentation, tips and repeat customers?
Poplin's customer-retention guidance goes beyond simply washing and folding laundry correctly.
At the end of its Marketing Playbook, Poplin tells Laundry Pros that what keeps customers using the service is a "top notch experience" and the feeling that their clothes have returned "like a present."
Other Poplin training materials reviewed by PoplinReviews encourage presentation techniques intended to improve customer satisfaction and tips.
Poplin does not require Laundry Pros to purchase gifts for customers.
However, public worker-community posts reviewed by PoplinReviews show some Pros taking the customer-experience strategy further, including examples of workers adding candy, balloons, baked goods and other small extras to customer deliveries.
Those choices are voluntary.
They also take place within an incentive structure in which Poplin says tips generate points and customer retention affects future order availability.
Do new Poplin Laundry Pros get fewer orders?
Yes. Poplin explicitly says new and lower-ranked Laundry Pros get access to fewer orders.
Its Introduction to Points tells newer and lower-ranked Pros to make the most of the opportunities they receive so they can improve their rank.
The company's training video gives essentially the same instruction: use the opportunities you get to improve your rank because better rank provides access to more orders.
Poplin's How to Get Offered More Orders guide also suggests that lower-ranked Pros temporarily widen their work radius.
The company explains:
"As your Laundry Pro rank improves and you get access to more orders, you can become more selective about which orders you accept."
That dynamic also appears in public worker discussions.
In a 2026 Reddit discussion about Poplin order volume, one new worker said they had been on the platform for about a month before receiving their first order, which they described as a $22 job involving two loads and substantial driving.
That individual experience does not establish how long a typical new Laundry Pro waits for work. Order availability varies by market, customer demand and competition.
The underlying mechanism, however, comes directly from Poplin: new and lower-ranked Pros get access to fewer orders.
What are Poplin Laundry Pro badges?
Poplin uses badges as another layer of its points and ranking system.
As Laundry Pros accumulate points and meet other requirements, they can unlock higher badge levels and additional privileges.
Poplin's Laundry Pro Badges and Rewards documentation describes benefits that can include the ability to have multiple active orders and other platform privileges.
Some badge levels also require minimum customer ratings.
Poplin's Incorrect Badge documentation, for example, says Silver requires both 1,000 points and at least a 4.5 average customer rating.
How do badges affect the number of Poplin orders a Pro can take?
Badge level can directly affect order capacity.
According to Poplin's Active Order Limit policy:
"The number of active orders you are permitted is determined by your badge."
That means Poplin's system affects earning opportunity in at least two different ways:
Rank affects access: Higher-ranked Pros get access to available orders first.
Badge affects capacity: Badge status can determine how many active orders a Pro is permitted to work simultaneously.
Higher badge levels can also unlock other benefits, including payout privileges, discounts and account bonuses.
What happens if a Poplin Laundry Pro is late or has an emergency?
Poplin's point system doesn't mean every disruption automatically results in a penalty.
Its Order Support center provides procedures for situations including:
- Missed pickups
- Unsafe situations
- Unsanitary laundry
- Inaccessible delivery locations
- Customer non-response
- Other order problems
Current policies allow Laundry Pros to exit certain qualifying unsafe or unsanitary orders without a penalty when the appropriate process is followed.
Poplin also provides mechanisms for certain deadline extensions and order reassignments.
That matters because some older worker accounts and third-party reporting describe a system with little flexibility around emergencies or problem orders. Poplin's current written policies are more nuanced than that characterization.
For ordinary lateness outside qualifying exceptions, however, Poplin says points can still be affected.
Does Poplin rank affect how much a Laundry Pro can earn?
Rank does not establish a specific amount a Laundry Pro will earn.
It does, however, affect access to earning opportunities.
Poplin says higher-ranking Pros get access to orders first, while lower-ranked Pros get fewer orders.
The company makes the concentration of orders explicit in its Introduction to Points:
"A small group of Laundry Pros in each market cover the majority of orders."
The same page says high-ranking Pros in established markets can work full time and earn more than $1,200 per week.
The training video embedded on the page uses a different benchmark, saying the best Pros in established markets can earn almost $2,000 per week.
Poplin currently publishes still other earnings figures elsewhere on its website.
Those figures may refer to different groups, markets or periods, and Poplin's public documentation does not provide enough information to make all of them directly comparable.
We'll examine those claims, Poplin's 75/25 base-order split, worker-paid expenses and worker-reported earnings separately in How Much Do Poplin Laundry Pros Actually Make?.
What doesn't Poplin explain about its ranking algorithm?
Poplin publishes substantial information about some parts of its order-distribution system.
We know the point values assigned to customer ratings. We know how pickup and delivery deadlines can add or subtract points. We know tips generate points. We know Poplin considers customer retention important to new-order availability. We know rank determines who gets access to orders first. And we know badge status can affect active-order capacity.
Other parts remain unclear from Poplin's public documentation.
Is rank based only on points?
The current written Help Center says points determine rank.
But Poplin's training video describes points as "not the only, but ... one of the most important factors" determining rank.
If factors outside a Pro's point total currently influence rank, the public documentation reviewed by PoplinReviews does not clearly identify them.
How many factors does Poplin's algorithm use?
Poplin's current written points article says workers gain or lose points based on seven factors, but the page lists only six.
The training video embedded on the same page says Laundry Pros gain or lose points based on "dozens of factors."
The video also discusses customer retention, which isn't included in the six-item list on the current written page.
It is unclear whether these differences reflect changes to Poplin's system over time or simply different ways the company has described it.
How exactly is Poplin's retention score calculated?
Poplin defines retention generally, but its public documentation does not appear to provide the complete formula behind the retention score displayed to Laundry Pros.
It also remains unclear from the public materials:
- Whether the displayed retention score itself is used in ranking or simply represents underlying retention data
- How heavily retention is weighted relative to ratings, tips, speed and other factors
- Whether additional factors outside the published point total currently influence rank
- How similarly ranked Laundry Pros are prioritized for the same available order
- How often Poplin changes its ranking algorithm or the weighting of its inputs
These aren't merely technical questions.
Poplin says rank determines which Laundry Pros get access to orders first, so the mechanics behind that rank can affect a worker's opportunity to earn.
There is currently no communication between Poplin and PoplinReviews, so we don't have additional clarification from the company beyond its publicly available materials.
If Poplin publishes information that answers these questions or updates its documentation, we'll update this article accordingly.
What does Poplin's ranking system mean for Laundry Pros?
Poplin Laundry Pros have meaningful control over their work.
They can decide whether to accept available orders, control their availability, set their service radius and step away from the platform when they don't want to work. Poplin's current policies also provide protections for certain unsafe situations, missed pickups and circumstances outside a Pro's control.
But Poplin's own materials show that those independent contractors operate inside a structured performance hierarchy.
Points affect standing. Rank determines who gets access to orders first. Ratings, tips, speed, messaging and customer retention can affect that standing. Badge status can limit how many orders a worker is allowed to hold simultaneously. And new and lower-ranked workers get access to fewer orders.
Poplin itself describes the marketplace as "very competitive" and tells lower-ranked Pros that as their rank improves, they'll be able to become more selective about which orders they accept.
None of that establishes that Poplin's ranking system is unfair. Nor does it mean Laundry Pros don't have meaningful flexibility.
It does clarify what Poplin's promise to "Accept the gigs you want" means in practice:
Laundry Pros can choose among the work made available to them. Poplin's ranking system helps determine how much work they get the opportunity to choose from.
Frequently Asked Questions About Poplin Laundry Pro Orders and Rank
